Comment

Date: For a charter dating from the previous year implying the recent death of Richard's mother, Adeliz, see above, no. 27. Earl Baldwin I's gift has not been traced. Lymington was one of the family's demesne manors, where a borough was later founded (below, no. 59 and Appendix 1, no. 28; PRS, NS vii, 1930, p 195). Robert de Whitefield's salterns were probably at Milford (Hants.)- his son held land there (below, Appendix 11, nos. 20, 24) and his grandson, William Maskerel, confirmed the tithe of his Milford salterns to Quarr (below, Appendix 11, no. 24; PRO, E 326-8913) A.D.
