Comment
Date: The witness list is identical to those in the charter which follows (no. 27) and in a confirmation by Robert bishop of Exeter, dated 1146 (Monasticon Anglicanum, v, 106-7). It seems therefore that, although this gift represents the foundation of the priory of St James, and was confirmed as such before December 1142 by the Empress Matilda (Regesta, iii, 24 1, no. 65 1), Baldwin's 'foundation' charter was not issued for some years. This is consistent with the omission of any reference to this gift in Pope Innocent's general charter to S. Martin des Champs, dated 23 March 1143 (Rec. S. Martin des Champs., ii, 127-40). For an agreement between S. Martin des Champs and Exeter Cathedral concerning the chapel of St James and dated 18 October 1143, see HMC, Various Collections, iv (1907), pp 45-6. Walter must have been the Redvers's tenant on their manor of St James Church, just outside Exeter.Charter on the DEEDS-homepage: http://deeds.library.utoronto.ca/charters/00790026
